On the YeshuaInContext blog, I posted Friday an intriguing insight into an eyewitness whose stories about Yeshua were known to the early community. The eyewitness is Cleopas. And he is one of several historical figures whose story stands out in the gospels. After years of reading historical Jesus books, I have been delighted so far with Richard Baukham’s Jesus and the Eyewitnesses: The Gospels as Eyewitness Testimony.
The Cleopas story is interesting because for various reasons, it is historically apparent that he is included by name for a significant reason. Also, many readers will be surprised to find out what relationship Cleopas had to Yeshua. I was unaware of the connection.

I also read Baukham’s book and highly recommend it. He assimilates much of what is good of the methods of modern criticism but uses them to reach traditonal conclusions. He also shows what is faulty in how some of the modern methods have normally been applied. But what is great about this book is how a scholarly work like this manages to read (for many chapters) like a detective story that is a “page turner”!
