PODCAST: Yeshua in Context – The Sign of His Death

300px-Justus_Lipsius_Crux_Simplex_1629We have been considering the way Yeshua came not only to teach something with words, but to enact his message with symbolic actions. Yeshua the healer acted out a picture of the Age to Come, in which all will be healed and life will be the reigning order of the day. Yeshua the demon-expeller acted out a picture of the defeat of all evil powers when kingship of this world will pass to the God who made the world. Yeshua the Sabbath healer acted out a picture of the Age to Come as an unending Sabbath for the whole world.

I alluded to the fact that the greatest of Yeshua’s signs was and is the cross. I am not saying that the cross was nothing more than an acted out message or a symbol. Saying that the death of Yeshua is symbolic does not discount the idea that it also accomplished something in the heavens and in the justice of God.

Yeshua the teacher started a messianic movement, ran afoul of the corrupt Temple leadership of his generation, was presented to the Romans as a troublemaker, and was executed under the authority of Pontius Pilate, Procurator of Judea.

Was Yeshua merely a victim? It seems to me this is one of the most important questions we can raise in order to understand his death.
