Is Your “Rabbi” Kosher?

Many so-called Messianic groups have a problem. If the description you find here fits your rabbi or leader, you should consider finding other community in Messiah. Rabbi Schiffman nails this one. See his thoughts here.

    Dear Derek,

This is an amazing post. I have had this discussion over and over again with people about this subject. I’m not sure why it is such a hard concept to grasp, but I think that it may be due to a few things:

    1. An overall rejection of the legitimacy of non-messianic Judaism
    2. An overall ignorance of non-messianic Judaism
    3. The carry over of evangelical Christian leadership constructs into messianic Judaism.

I can’t put a real number on it, but it seems as though the overwhelming majority of MJ are terribly uneducated…and I’m not even talking about a rabbinical education. I am far from a scholar of ANYTHING, but I drool just thinking about studying traditional Jewish literature and I have the uneasy feeling that a LOT of MJ leaders have candyshop libraries. I think it’s time to go to whole foods with these guys. I’m backing off now…as the author quoted “It is easier to be critical than to be correct…”

I could go on for a while about this, but I rarely read long blog posts or comments :)

p.s. Derek I know it is hard. I admire you continuing to try to bring gems from the Rabbis in your teachings at TD despite being berated at times for doing so. I admire you for your conversion also. Regardless of what one thinks of it, it openly displays a concern for halacha within MJ…something that is desperately needed.

as an edit to my above post…” overwhelming majority of MJ” should read “…majority of MJ ‘rabbis'” sorry. :) Not trying to be a jerk, I just want to express my frustration with the situation. I hope and pray for a better future in MJ. I have grown a lot in the past four years, and I know we have to be full of grace toward one another in this.
