Tradition, a worthy saying

Saw this in a comment on Scot McKnight’s blog today. People often say they are against Messianic Judaism because we place too much emphasis on a tradition, Jewish tradition. Many people vainly imagine their religious practice is pure Bible, like Ivory Soap (I’d say religious groups that try to have minimal tradition are more like watered down coffee). Here is a saying by one of the best known church historians:

“The only alternative to tradition is bad tradition.” – Jaroslav Pelikan

“Tradition is the living faith of the dead. Traditionalism is the dead faith of the living.”
